Since 1896, the film has enjoyed a strong presence in Gauteng. It was first introduced as "the most surprising scientific marvel of the age. " Gauteng was home to a thriving local production industry during 1916 and 1919, but in the 1920s popularity of American movies have overwhelmed the fledgling industry.
Films have been a source of popular entertainment over the years 1920 and 30. As a form of propaganda they have been presented in the mines to divert minors and retain more "dangerous" occupations City. Later, they became a source of inspiration and style of anime, hybrid community of Sophiatown, Lady Selbourne and Marabastad where they provided access to dance, American culture and jazz.
Poets and writers like Don Mattera and Es'kia Mphahlele learned and perfected their English in cinemas. Local gangsters had their dress, speech and attitudes of American movies. The late introduction of television in 1976, retained many cinemas busier than their European and American counterparts. This rich cultural heritage has been sadly weakened over the decades like many black artists were forced into political exile and filmmakers who work in more countries increasingly borne the brunt of apartheid laws archaic censorship.
Some of the most important productions in South Africa feature film from the 1950s to the late 1980s was dominated by apartheid and its injustices. Jim Donald Swanson recently (1949) Johannesburg, Zoltan Korda's Cry the Beloved Country (1951), Lionel Rogosin's Come Back Africa (1959), Sven Persson Land Apart (1974), Gibson Kente's How Long (1976), David Bensusan's My Country, My Hat (1982), Oliver Schmitz 'Mapantsula (1988) and Sir Richard Attenborough's Cry Freedom (1987) remind us, alas, some moments darkest of the country.
Many films in the 1990s continued to focus on the legacy of apartheid and the period political transition. Anant Singh and Darrell Roodt rose to fame with Sarafina! (1992), as well as their adaptation of Cry the Beloved Country (1995), while the scale internationally renowned artist William Kentridge has used the industrial landscape Stark Johannesburg from its coal acclaimed animated shorts to explore the intersections of the dramatic land, history, conflict and identity.
The local industry of feature films from a new democratic regime was a bit of a renaissance with an increase broader themes. The recent successes of such films as the Academy Award winning Tsotsi by Gavin Hood and Elalini Tristan Holmes, Jason Xenopoulos Promised Land ', Roodt's Corner Faith, Zola Maseko Drum and John Barker Bunny Chow are indicative of a "New wave".
