
Argentine tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, has been entertaining for fans of jazz more than half a century. Gato Barbieri is Spanish for "Barbieri the Cat ", his real name is Leandro Barbieri. Gato career lasted from free jazz, Latin jazz, jazz and pop, in 2002, Gato released his first studio album 50th. He first took the music with the clarinet at age 12 after hearing Charlie Parker's Now's the Time.
Gato Barbieri started his musical life professional playing alto saxophone with pianist Lalo Schifrin in Argentina during the 1950s. While in Lalo's band, Gato was the chance to play some performances with jazz greats like Coleman Hawkins and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1962, Gato is a party in Italy, home of his first wife, and took the tenor saxophone.
In Italy, the influence of design by John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders, Barbieri began collaborating with trumpeter Don Cherry. As a sideman for Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri played on two albums of free jazz, Complete Communion and Symphony for Improvisers.
In 1969 with the release of the Third World, Barbieri began his career as a conductor. His music has begun to show an influence of South America and earned her enough recognition that landed the job of composing the soundtrack of Bernardo Bertolucci, Last Tango in Paris. His success on that film music has won him a Grammy Award and a recording contract with Impulse. He also started a profitable side career for Barbieri, he scored more than a dozen films in three different continents.
In the late 1970s, Barbieri has turned its attention this time to jazz pop that became common at the time. During this phase his career was recording for A & M Records. One of the most successful albums of that era, and one of the most successful his career was Caliente. The album contains a cover version Barbieri of Carlos Santana's Europa. Another great album during his years with A & M Records was Shadow of the Cat. A & M label owner, and the great jazz trumpeter, Herb Alpert playing trumpet for three songs on this album.
Barbieri wife died in 1980 and six weeks after his passing, he underwent triple bypass surgery. Because of the toll these events have had on him, Barbieri disappeared from public view for some time. He returned from a forceful way in 1997, his Columbia Records release Que Pasa was the fourth best selling contemporary jazz albums this year.
In 2004, Universal Music Gato Barbieri honored by publishing a collection of his work in their 20th series Century Masters. Other musicians to receive this honor in 2004 were Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker, and Carmen McRae. Gato was also honored by his country of origin the same year that the Argentine ambassador to the United States to receive a prize awarded for the overall achievements of the Consulate of Argentina New York City.
