George Shearing was born blind, August 13, 1919, but his life was fast and full of achievements. Born in London, the shear is the youngest of nine children even if born blind, then to create one of the most recognized sounds in jazz.

At the age of three, Shearing learned to play the piano. Then, Linden Lodge School for the Blind was his home away from home for four years. While in school, Shearing also learned to play the accordion. He even played in a local pub for the equivalent of nearly $ 5 a week.

Shortly after, Shearing joined a group of blind musicians. In 1937, at age 18, George Shearing began recording music with Leonard Feather. After three years of records with feathers, Harry Parry group made shear. Meanwhile, the shear has also been honored as the winner of seven polls Melody Maker.

Although he moved to the United States in 1947, he became a U.S. citizen in 1956. During those nine years, George Shearing began playing a new style of music that incorporated swing, bop, modern and classical.

1949 marks the year that Shearing founded the first George Shearing Quintet. The quintet included Marjorie Hyams, Chuck Wayne, John Levy, and Denzil Best. The first single from the quintet was September in the rain, and it sold over 900,000 copies. In 1969, the quintet stopped recording with Capitol, but Sheaving solved the problem by starting Sheba his own record label.

From 1970 to 1978, the quintet disassembled. During these eight years, and the meeting with George Shearing were released. Shearing recorded and released the album in collaboration with renowned bassist Andy Simpkins, Rusty Jones, drummer and musician Stéphane Grappelli. Over the years, including the music of other collaborations with the Montgomery Brothers, Marian McPartland, Brian Q. Torff, Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Kenny Davern, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Ernestine Anderson, Dakota Staton, Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson. Concord Records signed George Shearing in 1979. Under Concord Records, he won a Grammy Award in 1982 and 1983.

From the 1980s through the 1990s, George Shearing in many festivals, was on many radio and made numerous recordings. Collaboration with Neil Swainson occurred in the 1990s through the early 21st century. The Rare Delight of You, an album with Shearing and the John Pizzarelli Trio, was released in 2002. It has received good reviews.

Along the way, now a popular piano technique was named after mowing. It is called Shearing Voicing. This technique uses a block chord with the melody on top of the right hand while the hand left repeats the melody in a lower octave and makes him stand out on the right hand. It is a difficult style to master, especially when you playing solo. In his quintet Shearing has the vibes player playing the melody also, creating what some have described as a harmonic "shimmering" effect.

Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road describes a lovely performance shearing. In all his years of service music, Shearing recorded and released nearly 100 albums and has received many notable awards. Westminster College in Utah gave him an honorary doctorate in music in 1975. Shear also received the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans in 1978. In 1993, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement was given to him. Shear has received an honorary degree from Hamilton College in New York. It was also a Doctor of Music honoris causa doctorate. He received the first American Music Award of the National Arts Club of New York in 1998. Recently, the BBC Jazz Awards Lifetime 'Achievement was awarded to Shearing in 2003. George Shearing becomes Sir George Shearing in 2007 when he was knighted for his services to music.

Now, Sir George and his wife travel from their apartment in New York Berkshires frequently. Shearing is semi-retired.

Slap Happy by Alan Dworsky and Betsy Sansby is an illustrated textbook that teaches the rhythms of youth groups. The book contains 72 pages in total, 3 of which are empty maps at the back of the book the reader can photocopy and use to chart their own songs using the rhythms of the book. Sources for further study can also be found at the end of the book, including CD's, books and videos to the rhythms of West African djembe drums and Afro-Cuban rhythms conga drums. Beginning with simple models of practice, the authors gradually increase the difficulty level.

The book is accompanied by a play a CD with 64 tracks ranging from 20 seconds to minutes of the last track is a sample from the band he calls Jaguar. (Based on the sample I am eager to order a copy of this CD.) Quality of drums and sound recording on the CD to play in Slap Happy same time were exceptional. The authors do all the rhythms on the CD – while Alan Dworsky and Mark Anderson play the drum sections. Recordings are accompanied by extensive real djembe, conga and other traditional instruments, which makes the experience much more whole and with lasting impact.

I think the book is guaranteed to bring laughter. Certainly a bit of exercise, activities in the book are an excellent way burn energy, increase coordination group and to build interaction skills. Young people will be enchanted by the rhythms funky resonance. You will not find a rhythm hokey children here – instead, you'll learn popular West African and Cuban rhythms that can be heard in music today. There are parties who may be advanced enough for tweens, in particular bar-clave with the feet, but Most rhythms can be easily reached age 8. One of the best aspects of this book is that there is no need to invest in instruments at all.

The talented artist, Toni Pawlowsky, created the cover and some illustrations while contributing artists Kendell Jay and Robert Jackson. Print on the recycled acid free paper using soy ink – Slap Happy is certainly an environmentally friendly choice.

Alan Dworsky and Betsy Sansby drafted 8 pounds – at least 2 of them have received the "Best Percussion Method Book Award by Drum Magazine. Interestingly, the authors were born a few blocks from each other during the 1950s in Minnesota. Thirty years later, they marry and have collaborated in the production of music and books ever since.

I can think of a myriad of places that could apply to this book: schools, youth programs, churches and organizations such as Boys and Girls Club, Brownies or Cubs. Sleepovers, birthday parties and groups of brothers and sisters can get a lot of fun on Slap Happy, as well.

To call the French and Indian War in America "Forgotten War" is misleading because it leaves no good nicknames for wars Barbary War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War or the Korean War. Otherwise, the title single, the war of the enormous French and Indian influence, the struggle between Great Britain, France, several Native American Nations, and settlers, is responsible for the fact that, among other things, the United States is here and in French Canada is up there.

Until the war began in 1754, Great Britain, while in small strip of North American colonies was surrounded on all sides by the Atlantic, the French to the north and west, and the Spaniards in Florida and parts of Georgia and Alabama. In fact, over territory in what is now the United States was claimed by France than England. Imagine a modern day French Missouri. Or Kentucky. Or Minnesota, Dontcha know. Meanwhile, the Indians remain in the areas were forced to take sides – even though many groups, such as the League of Iroquois, made the most of the encroachment by the negotiation of agreements secrets with the two parties.

The trouble all began when a dispute arose over the region of the Ohio Valley. In 1753, at only 21 years, George Washington was commissioned by the British governor of Virginia to go tell the French to vacate. Without any military training or experience earlier, he led his men 500 miles of desert to complete his mission – should be rejected by the French. In one year, he was ordered return to the Forks of the Ohio to build a strong British competitors, but this time he would be accompanied Tanaghrisson, governor of Delaware, Shawnee, Mingo and the Ohio Valley. En route, Washington has entered a skirmish with the French, just outside the modern-day Pittsburgh. The British won and everything went perfectly until Tanaghrisson decided to kill the captured French officer and his soldiers wounded in negotiations.

Thus (informally) started the French and Indian War, which would eventually result in the takeover of British the entire French territory in North America. The British Fared horribly for years because of an unwillingness arrogant align with the natives and overall snootiness to their "inferior" colonial subjects. (Note to self: senior officers below Infantry British colonialism is not a stimulant to morale.) In fact, the decisive victory of Great Britain would not have been possible without the fact that Prussia, who came to invade the Austrian protectorate of Saxony in 1756.

Before you start getting wild ideas about Chaos Theory, keep in mind that Britain and France were engaged in the Seven Years War, back in Europe, and that Prussia and Austria were allies of the British and French, respectively. The invasion of Prussia and Great Britain's then forced France to join the fight on the European continent, giving their colonial subjects more freedom to do battle with each other. In 1758, after Great Britain had already made some serious rethinking of how to treat its colonial such haste The U.S. troops had joined the forces of Great Britain swelled to 50,000 – which was to roughly equal to the white population of all French territories. That, plus a little help from their friend ole smallpox, allowed the British to defeat top hand his rival French and native, winner of Canada and all lands east of the Mississippi, in the process.

In exchange to restore Cuba to the French ally Spain, Britain has also received the Spanish holdings in the region of Florida. But, by British proclamation of 1763, all lands west of the Appalachians would be preserved as a Native American soil. The British had hoped to stem the flood of settlers to the west, but to the Proclamation just pissed off everyone. Fortunately for the settlers, the French were quite bitter about their defeat in North America, which is handy when the American Revolution wrapped around little more than a decade later. And thank you to George Washington's intensive training in wilderness, the rest was history.

Big Band Swing music really developed during the 20s, New Orleans Dixieland and Ragtime. Trumpet and Coronet player King Oliver was one of hot bands playing New Orleans and New York. The young Louis Armstrong was in this band in the early 20's, just before to join Fletcher Henderson. Louis Armstrong was an innovator also working with groups and conductors who have been innovators themselves.

Fletcher Henderson: The innovative first major Big Band Swing

In 1924, Armstrong had joined the Fletcher Henderson band. This is where a lot of real ground work for what would be the big band swing
occurred. Henderson is credited Standards for the use of trumpets, trombones and saxophones in the big band. Before that the bands were smaller. Many copied his arrangements and later Benny Goodman hired him as an arranger for his own band.

Sound of King Oliver is a much smaller group with instruments from their own direction as soloists, trumpet, clarinet and trombone.

Henderson expanded greatly to the healthy and had different sections of trumpets, trombones and reeds are independently from each other, but play together
as fully harmonized sections. It became more away from the noise of New Orleans and closer to the big band swing sound, we usually identify with … and saxophones
instead of clarinets … Yaayyy!

Harlem, New York was the hub
The hot soak in Harlem was the Savoy Ballroom were the whole world wanted to play and everyone wanted to dance. The Cotton Club had Duke Ellington as the house band of the late 20's and has been building his own big band he wrote and the organization and the stretch of this new musical landscape.

At that time the Cotton Club was different Savoy, because it was a showroom for whites entertainment primarily by the black
musicians and dancers. The Savoy is primarily for blacks.

Chick Webb: The Drummer Drummers
Chick Webb was the first drummer to lead a big band and thereby paved the way for Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson, all of which were removed by Webb during the battle "bands" that were regular events in Savoy Ballroom.

The Chick Webb Orchestra became the house band at the Savoy around 1931 and became a real favorite with the Lindy Hop dancers who called "King of the Savoy." He and his band of killers were at the battles of the band. Unfortunately, Webb has lived for 30 years due to tuberculosis of the spine.

Each group worked at that time and was in New York would stop at the Savoy either to take part in the Battle of
bands, or simply a drink and see the "King". Through the 30's list of musicians who have attended The club is a who's who of the Swing Era, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa …. imagine being there!

The standards and models had been put there at the Savoy, Fletcher Henderson in the musical arrangements and Chick Webb with musical talent that set the performance.

It seems that the story regarding the Swing Era had begun immediately after the famous Benny Goodman performance at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935. This may have been when the rest of America and the world has heard through the media, but Big Bands Swingin had been "since the mid 20's.

There seems to be a similar comparison in the way rock and roll on the entry point masses in the mid 50's, even if she was alive and well since the late 40's … big band swing, created primarily by blacks in the 20s and a decade later, says Benny Goodman King of Swing. Rock and roll is created primarily by blacks in the years 40, then a decade later, Elvis Presley is known as the king of rock and roll … funny how it worked.

The two Presley and Goodman played a major role in bringing the most popular music of their time to the masses, Goodman was a hard working conductor and one of the best clarinetist of his day, Elvis had a great voice and stage presence but we were musical innovators.

The Big Swing Band era ended several years ago, but you can still hear them today … of tribute bands, neo big band groups Swing, college big bands, swing bands, modern, Brian Setzer Orchestra, etc.

Sound Big Band Swing is here to stay because it is too cool!

Piano is the latest Smooth Jazz artist Keiko Matsui, and is another great talent of this musician.

It is a day very I rarely get a CD from an artist that I can honestly say not a bad track in the bunch. I am more than happy to announce that's exactly what I have to say about it. There simply isn'ta bad one in the bunch. No filler at all here, with each song stands on its own.

One of the many refreshing things about this CD is the average of all participating artists seem really fun. Combine this with the overall presentation and you get one of the most impressive releases Keiko Matsui ever.

If you're even slightly Smooth Jazz music you'll enjoy this CD. Throughout the piano version is a great class. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not disappointed with a single track.

While this CD is full of the outstanding real standout tunes are track 1 – Presence of the Moon, track 3 — Whisper From The Mirror, and track 5 – Light above the trees.

SmoothLee My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [... as in "Stuck On Repeat '] is the route 10 – see you there. Good stuff!
