Rock and roll artists tend to think they invented the concept of rebellion. That before their kind came, everything was goody-two-shoes and Miss Manners. What they forget is that the music industry has always been a place of innovation a source of social uproar. Same the waltz, when it was introduced, was considered an outrage at first because of the proximity of couples were going to dance to she! Yes, rock and roll artists are just following the tradition of the industry scandal, a tradition that at no time was more frequent than in the era of swing jazz or swing. In his time, swing music was the ultimate revolution, a violent break from the Charleston the previous decade. Swing music was characterized by a strong and rhythmic drive, and the bands who played it were anchored by sections rhythmic equally strong. These sections tend to be led by drummers whose personalities were as big as their music, and a number of drummers jazz swing remain legends even today.
Sonny Greer (1895-1982) is best known for his work with the legendary Duke Ellington. Originally from New Jersey, he eventually became Ellington first drummer in 1919 at the age of 24 years. Greer was not only a drummer, he also designed the instrument with the Leedy Drum Company. This job allowed him to set up a drum kit worth over $ 3,000, the equivalent of $ 36,000 today. This gentleman has done its part to match the image of jazz as a kind of debauchery. He was a drinker and a pool hall and Hustler Unfortunately, these qualities ultimately leads to a permanent separation between him and Ellington. He continued to work as a freelance drummer and briefly led his own group, but the association Greer with Ellington marked the apogee of its success.
Gene Krupa (1909-1973) was known for his energetic style and flamboyant drums. He was a member of a number of bands, but the biggest name ever played with Benny Goodman was no doubt. Krupa drum is also the flagship of swing music, Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing". His association with this song made him an instant national celebrity. Although is, as Greer has had a disagreement with the conductor and left the group after his career did not falter. Despite the occasional passage in prison for possession of marijuana, Krupa continued to practice in the early 1970s.
William Henry Webb, aka Chick Webb (c.1905-1939) was a precocious child who saved up enough money from his paper route to buy a drum set, he first played level professional at the age of 11 years. In addition to being a drummer, Webb was the longtime leader of his own group, which has been the orchestra house of the famous Savoy Ballroom. The Savoy often hosted "Battle of the Bands" contest, in which the Webb band was pitted against tastes of Benny Goodman and Count Basie Orchestra. The biggest name associated with Webb Ella Fitzgerald, whom he begins to appear as a singer in 1935 when the singer was 18. After the untimely death of Webb (due to complications related to a fight childhood tuberculosis), Fitzgerald continued to lead his band for four years before leaving to concentrate on his solo career.
Bernard "Buddy" Rich (1917-1987) was presented as "the greatest drummer in the world" and was known for his power, speed and testing technology. He, like Webb, was called battery at an early age, and when he was 18 months, he made his musical debut in vaudeville. He never received any formal drum and may have had more raw talent than any other drummer of his generation. During his career he was associated with a number of names celebrities, including Tommy Dorsey, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

This was and is terrifically important music: Ellington is in grand form between re… |
